The Bill Scott and Grant Reynolds Formula Vee Championship

Sponsored by Paul Meis, the FV championship was originally named in honor of Grant Reynolds at the 2006 VIR Driver's Meeting.  Grant is a long-time SCCA member and Steward who was honored in 2006 by being inducted into the SCCA Hall of Fame for his work with Solo events.

In 2009 Paul added the name of Bill Scott to honor him also in the title of the Championship. Bill passed away in 2009 after fighting cancer for several years. Bill has been  known to us as the owner of Summit Point Raceway and a good friend of vintage racing. Bill was also a national FV champion, and he won the world FV championship in 1970 at the Nurburgring. Thus, the VDCA FV Championship is now the Bill Scott and Grant Reynolds FV Championship.

Once again, the season championship came down to the Season Finale.  Mike Ennis, who finished first in 2010,  and Duke Waldrup who finished second last year, battled it out once again for the title. Mike Ennis spun on the back of the track in the first lap of Sunday's race and had to make up the position loss throughout the race. It was exciting Vee racing to watch him work his way back up the line, finally catching Paul Meis. The margin of victory for third place over all between Paul Meis and Mike Ennis was 0.006 sec. Visually, it looked like a dead heat, but the fourth place finish was not enough to top first place finisher Waldrup in the points battle.

The Charlie Gibson H-Production Championship

Both series are bookkept and finalized by Paul Meis who says,
"We encourage more drivers and more competition for these championships in 2011, and remember, you can score 30 extra points by sponsoring a track party!"

see below for the point system

This Championship is named in honor of the late Charlie Gibson who began an illustrious racing career in a Bugeye Sprite.  Since Charlie's Sprite was actually a G-Prod car, we hope he doesn't mind if we take a little creative license there.  In its fifth year, the championship has been well supported and very competitive.

Eleven drivers scored points in 2010, with Gary Barnhart repeating as series champion with 198 points. The competition for second place was remarkably close. Jim Hofer and John Daniels were tied in points going into the final race at Roebling Road. They ran together during the race and John finished just ahead of Jim to win second place in the championship by one point, with Jim finishing third.

Sadly, 2011 has not seen that much participation, but Gary Barnhart established the lead early on and maintained it throughout the season, challenged only by Buzz Merchlewitz.   Paul has decided to retire the competition at the end of 2011 so the trophy, awarded in April at VIR, will stay permanently with Gary.

-- The  2010 Season --

During Friday’s drivers meeting at VIR 2011, Paul Meis, as is his tradition, took the opportunity to award his trophies for the 2010 Group 1 Formula Vee and HP Challenges. The HP Award is named for Charlie Gibson, and eleven drivers scored points in 2010 with Gary Barnhart repeating as series champion with 198 points. The competition for second place was remarkably close. Jim Hofer and John Daniels were tied in points going into the final race at Roebling Road. They ran together during the race with John finishing just ahead of Jim to win second place in the championship by one point.

Twenty-one drivers competed for the Bill Scott and Grant Reynolds Formula Vee Championship. Series champion was Mike Ennis, who was consistent in finishing and consistently fast. Mike scored 385 out of a possible 425 points. Second place went to Duke Waldrup with 256 points and third was last year’s champion, Paul Buttrose with 260 points.
